About the South Walderstown Road Race:

Since July 2000, the Fore Motor Cycle Racing Club's annual "Race of the South" has been held on the Walderstown circuit, a few miles from Athlone, Co. Westmeath. However the race has a long history, stretching back over 30 years to 1973. The first "Race of the South" was promoted by the Dublin-based Fingal Motor Club on the Fore Village circuit, near Castlepollard, on Sunday, August 26, 1973. The inaugural meeting was a huge success and the event quickly established itself as one of the most popular on the Irish calendar. Fingal M.C. promoted the event up to 1979. North Dublin Motor Club took over in 1980 and ran it up to 1987.

Due to insurance problems no race was held in 1988.A new, locally-based organisation, Fore Motor Cycle Racing Club, revived the meeting in 1989 and has been in charge ever since. For a variety of reasons, the club sought a new course for the race in 2000.

Though there was some regret among fans and riders at the abandoning of the Fore Village circuit, the new Walderstown course has become just as popular, as proved by the massive crowds attending the meeting every July. Many leading riders have enjoyed success in the event over the years, among them Billy McCosh, Chris Goosen, Mervyn Robinson, Steven Cull, Joey Dunlop, George Farlow, Eddie Laycock, Johnny Rea, Phillip McCallen, Sam McClements, Eric Galbraith, Robert Dunlop, James Courtney, Derek Young, Dave Leach, Denis McCullough, Steve Galligan, Adrian Archibald, Darran Lindsay, Martin Finnegan, John Donnan and Ryan Farquhar.
